Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 Driver
Category: Tour Drivers
WE TESTED: 9.5° with Fujikura Fuel 50 graphite shaft; 9.5° with Aldila Phenom 50 graphite shaft; 9.5° with Aldila Phenom Nasty Long 60 graphite shaft; 9.5° with Project X graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Sole weight options allow for precise fitting and trajectories. The face has multiple thicknesses to improve ball speeds on heel and toe hits. Clubhead has multiple lofts (8.5° to 11.5°). Deep face provides more forgiveness on shots struck high or low.
DISTANCE: A solid stick off the tee—a bit sneaky, longer than you’d expect; good consistency in regard to overall yardage.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: A relatively accurate driver that gives you what you deserve on good swings; fairly easy to make solid contact and get in play; off-center hits don’t fly too far offline.
FEEL: Stable, with a good “smack” at impact; seems lighter than other drivers, in a good way; a few guys compare it to a “hot” baseball bat.
PLAYABILITY: Typically provides a straight, medium-high flight; shaping shots right to left is easy for most guys; no problem getting the ball into the air.
LOOK: The black matte finish is understated and pleasing; sits square with a useful “pointer” on the crown.
A number of testers would prefer more distance; some guys actually like a bit more spin to keep shots in the air longer; a few testers say the adjustable hosel appears to bulge out from the shaft.
BOTTOM LINE: The M3 does most things reasonably well for strong swingers, and it looks good in the process.
HOT STIX’S TAKE: Launch – Low; Spin – Low
