TaylorMade RocketBallz Stage 2 Fairway Woods
Category: Game-Improvement Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (15°), 5 (19°), and 5HL (21°) with Matrix RocketFuel 60 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A lower, more forward CG than in the original RocketBallz boosts ball speeds. A shallower face and lower profile than the original RBZ promotes a higher, easier launch.
PLAYABILITY: One of the easier woods to draw; clubs dig balls out of rough well; very easy to hit up in the air from fairway lies — ball flight is high, long and straight with the 19° and 21°.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Generous sweet spot does well to cover up miscues; no slices or hooks; produces better shots than testers deserve.
DISTANCE: Effective combo of carry and roll gives it a slight leg up on the original RBZ woods; 3-wood approaches driver-length off the tee.
FEEL: True to its name, balls rocket off the face on center shots; medium-size head packs a wallop, similar to larger, more muscular clubs.
LOOK: Now-familiar white crown has bold new graphics to take your eyes to the sweet spot.
A minority of guys say that feel can be muted, dull and belies how far the ball goes; a few testers find the crown graphics distracting, even confusing; the 3-wood doesn't fly high enough for some guys to hold greens.
BOTTOM LINE: These easy-to- hit fairway woods deliver above-average length. They're as long or longer than the original RocketBallz.
