Ryder Cup 2014: Equipment Watch — Who Plays Which Clubs and Balls

The Ryder Cup is one of few events in golf where players are devoid of sponsor logos, other than those on their clubs and golf balls. But that doesn’t mean they won’t have on-site help from club builders like at any regular Tour event. Most companies will have their European Tour equipment van on site at Gleneagles for last-minute tweaks.

Gleneagles will be wetter and softer than you’d expect of a European Ryder Cup site, meaning players probably won’t be adding 2-irons, driving irons or wedges with less bounce like they might at a drier, firmer course. However, the rough may pose a problem.

“The rough will be very green and lush,” said Justin Rose last week. “The only question I have right now is, ‘Do I put in a 3-iron or do I put in my 7-wood?’ With the 7-wood, I can gouge it out of a poor lie in the rough better than I can with an iron. But for the most part, everything else will stay the same.”

Golf balls are another important aspect of Ryder Cup equipment and may have an effect on foursomes pairings, where players are required to play the same ball during alternate shot.

“It’s a decision of comfort between the two players,” says Sergio Garcia. “One of them is going to have to make an extra effort to play the other guy’s ball.”

Here’s a quick look at which players are signed to which equipment companies, in addition to who plays what ball. (Note: Most equipment deals do not include all 14 clubs.)
