ClubTest 2014: Ping Scottsdale TR CRAZ-E Putter

May 28, 2014

Ping Scottsdale TR CRAZ-E
Category: Midsize Mallet Putters
Price: $180
34”, 35” shaft lengths
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Milled, variable-depth grooves (deeper in the middle of the face, shallower on the edges), offer consistent run-out regardless of impact location.

Exceptional from inside 15 feet and on off-center contact; excellent roll, while testers agree that the face grooves help on off-center hits.
FEEL: Extremely easy to putt with; very stable through the swing and at impact, with no torque; the ball feels light coming off the face on center hits; contact with the Scottsdale TR Craz-E is more muted on misses.
LOOK: Lots of visual help builds confidence; the matte black finish combines with a ghost image of two balls and a white center line to give it a striking appearance.

Some testers want more feedback (and a less metallic sound) than this offers; a few guys say that the light head requires extra oomph (and practice) for longer putts; although an “arc stroke” model is available, many testers think the weighting and head size mostly benefit straight-back-and-through swings.

BOTTOM LINE: One of the better-performing models. A friendly, confidence-building design that’s easy to line up and swing, with help on direction and distance. Almost second nature on putts from 15 feet and in.
