ClubTest 2013: Ping Anser Fairway Woods
Ping Anser Fairway Woods
Category: Better-Player Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (14.5°; +/- .5°), 4 (16.5°; +/- .5°), 5 (18.5°; +/- .5°) with Ping TFC 800F graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Rear weighting promotes a more penetrating ball flight and longer distance. "Trajectory Tuning" allows you to easily adjust launch angles and spin rates.
PLAYABILITY: Good at shaping shots from the fairway or tee; a boring trajectory with a medium amount of spin.
DISTANCE: Overall yardage is long and consistent; not too much shorter than a few guys' current drivers.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: One of the highest-rated clubs in the category; it's very friendly on lateral misses; impressive ability to control distance losses, especially off the tee.
FEEL: One of the best around — a nice, crisp crack at impact gives a feeling of solid compression; the ball shoots off the clubface with gusto.
LOOK: Matte black finish is tasteful and classy and a bit old school; clubhead sits comfortably behind the ball and appears easy to hit from the fairway.
The natural trajectory isn't quite high enough for some testers; feedback on mis-hits isn't always clear.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top-rated models. Testers award it very high marks for accuracy, forgiveness and feel.
