Nike VRS Covert Forged Irons
Category: Game-Improvement Irons
Price: $1,099, steel
WE TESTED: 4-AW with Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: These forged carbon steel heads provide impressive feedback for a game-improvement club. Variable face thicknesses contribute to faster ball speeds on mis-hits.
PLAYABILITY: One of the highest-rated irons in the test; these sticks allow you to play any shot you want or need; as versatile as a Swiss army knife, and they cut through rough or any tough lie.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: For a fairly traditional-looking club, they provide lots of help on misses; with a controlled swing they’re pin-seekers; short irons are fine-tuned weapons inside the scoring zone.
DISTANCE CONTROL: One of the top clubs — they go just as far as you think they will; short irons are no problem to gauge; even thin shots seem to fly about where you expect; testers love the consistency that exists on all but their worst swings.
FEEL: The VRS Covert Forged receives top marks for feel — buttery soft with all the feedback you need to tell good contact from bad; they let you know what you’ve done wrong; a terrific forged sensation and a nice click at impact.
LOOK: Near-perfect at setup with minimal offset and a thin topline — they’re real winners; beautiful finish and not too bulky; a modern look and very pretty.
A few testers say the soft feel can be a bit too muted; red grips aren’t for everyone.
BOTTOM LINE: The top model tested. It achieves very high marks across the board. A real winner in our testers’ eyes.
