When Alvaro Quiros got his first glimpse of Callaway’s “udesign” online customization tool, which allows you to dress your RAZR Fit driver head in one of eight colors, the Spanish golfer said: “Give me one in every color and I’ll match my driver with my apparel.” In the process, he may have started a new fashion trend on the PGA and European Tours, one made possible by the growing shift toward increased personalization and customization in the equipment industry.
If you want your driver to showcase the colors of your favorite sports team or alma mater, your golf ball to feature your favorite number, or your wedge to match that argyle sweater you’re wearing, it’s now possible thanks to the growing number of customization options on the market. Here are just a few that caught our eye.
Callaway RAZR Fit
The online tool allows you to configure a RAZR Fit driver with preferred color choices and specs, and to view the clubhead from several different angles in real time as you make design changes. Eight color accents for the head include red, orange, purple, gold, royal blue, white, green or powder blue. A Golf Pride New Decade MultiCompound grip comes in matching colors. You can also select loft, shaft (49 offerings), flex, shaft length (+/-2”), grip model and size (as many as seven wraps beneath the grip). In all, there are more than 70,000 configurations. The upcharge is $50 to personalize and customize your driver. (Some shafts and grips will incur additional costs.) Turnaround time is one to two weeks. Look for more “udesign” products soon.
Cleveland 588 Forged wedge
Cleveland brings the Tour Van experience to average golfers by offering the same sole grinds, finishes (Black Pearl, RTG or Satin), paint fill (20 colors) and logos that the Tour pros use. In addition, you can have your nickname or initials engraved on the head and even add a distinctive pattern (argyle, checkered or burst) to the club’s “outer skin.” All changes update in real time on your computer screen. You also get to customize the length, loft and lie angle, and select from more than a dozen shaft and grip options. Prices start at $150, and increase according to the level of customization. Logos and personalized IDs cost $15, the optional grinds and skins are $30, and custom shafts run $6 to $42. Turnaround time is two to three weeks. TaylorMade Penta TP5 ball
Martin Kaymer, the world’s number-one-ranked player for part of 2011, sports the number 59 on his Penta TP5 ball. And for good reason: He shot golf’s magic number in 2006 on the EPD (European Professional Development) Tour. Pros such as Sergio Garcia (22), Darren Clarke (60), Greg Norman (91) and Justin Rose (99) have their own special numbers, too. For a $2 upcharge ($48 per dozen), you can get a personalized “MyPenta” single or double-digit number (from 0-99 and 00-09). The minimum order is one dozen balls.
