In a new wrinkle on the phenomenon known as “scripting” — that is, when a pro golfer’s wardrobe is pre-planned by his apparel sponsor at big tournaments — this week Callaway Golf gives fans the opportunity to select the script for its sponsored golfer Alvaro Quiros at the PGA Championship by voting on the company’s Facebook page.
The long-hitting Quiros appears in eight outfits from Callaway’s spring 2011 apparel collection posted on Facebook through Monday, August 9. He will wear the four ensembles garnering the most votes. The PGA Championship will be held August 12-15 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
“We’re taking scripting one step further,” said Tim Buckman, a spokesman for Callaway. “While other apparel companies have scripted their athletes’ attire in advance, this marks the first time that fans have been able to make a determination.”
He added that the relaunch of the Callaway apparel line, which is completing its transition away from being produced by Ashworth (now part of TaylorMade-Adidas), will be supported by billboards and advertising on the Sony jumbotron in New York’s Times Square.
Developed with apparel partner Perry Ellis International, the new Callaway golf line is a highly technical, performance collection featuring moisture-wicking, stretch, and other performance fabrics. We especially liked the “Chev Pipe Line” and “Chev Pipe” polos, among others, at the website.
While you’re there, check out Quiros’ pencil whiskers. Those are serious sideburns.
