Cleveland TFI Smart Square Putter

Category: Large Mallet Putters
Price: $200
34″ shaft length
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The milled copper-aluminum face is backed by a softer polymer insert.

DISTANCE CONTROL: Many testers find it easy to control on medium- and longer-range lag putts; the ball has a way of dying near the hole—very few putts race too far by; excellent on slower greens that require a healthy strike to get the ball to the cup.
FEEL: The head absorbs vibration but there’s still enough feedback to the hands at impact; solid on center hits and stable feeling when you mis-hit it; nice balance through the stroke, which promotes a smooth tempo and leads to consistent contact.
LOOK: High-tech head shape has a striking, multi-colored approach; the large dual-square alignment aid is similar in nature to the venerable Odyssey 2-Ball, and it makes it easy to aim time after time; the copper-colored face insert is elegant, and its contrast with the black topline helps you set up on target.

The bold, square alignment aid isn’t everyone’s favorite—in fact, some find it flat-out off-putting; feel can be too muted for a few testers; a couple of guys say distance control on long lags isn’t the best of the bunch.

BOTTOM LINE: The TFI Smart Square is a strong all-around performer. It offers a number of useful visual cues and all the stability you’d expect in an oversize mallet design, given a lightweight aluminum body with heavier wings.
