Cleveland 588 Custom Driver
Category: Game-Improvement Drivers
WE TESTED: 9°, 10.5° with Matrix Ozik 6Q3 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Variable face thicknesses create faster ball speeds on slightly off-center hits. The hosel has 12 settings that change loft by +/- 1.5° and face angle up to 2.25° open or closed. Deeper face creates more forgiveness on shots struck high or low of center.
DISTANCE: The 588 Custom delivers above-average length for most testers; a sound option for those weekend warriors trying to build their game around a consistent driver distance.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: A fairly low-spinning clubhead translates into reliable accuracy and fairways hit; very consistent, easy swinging accuracy; big misses seem out of the question with this massive clubface.
FEEL: Balanced, light and easy to swing, good head feel from waggle through contact; a stable, relatively powerful sensation at impact.
PLAYABILITY: Some guys describe it as a cruisecontrol driver, set it up and hit it straight; the trajectory, altitude and distance are pretty consistent time after time.
LOOK: Sleek, all-black appearance; a conservative, traditional look, no distractions or flash here.
Some testers find it shorter than their own stick; several guys say it’s not responsive enough on attempts to shape shots; too bland looking for one group of guys, while others prefer a visual alignment aid on the crown rather than gold pinstripes; adjustability feature could be more user-friendly.
BOTTOM LINE: A dependable, solid option for average Joes.
