Jim Engh is to Colorado golf what the Kennedys are to Massachusetts politics: omnipresent. His latest course here is Four Mile Ranch in Canon City, where you’ll find a heaving canvas dotted with pinon trees, native grasses and a series of white shale rock ridges called hogbacks. These dune-like landforms presented so many interesting puzzles that Engh simply left them alone and decided not to add sand bunkers.
Does this mean that Engh has joined forces with the minimalist design crowd? Not quite. He simply decided to let the character of the land dictate the design.
“The geological formations gave us all the variety we needed,” he explains.
Four Mile Ranch is 35 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, and light years away from anything you’ve ever played before.
