|The Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort.|
Pick of the month: Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Reopened last fall after an extensive $3 million makeover, this updated classic offers the most fun you can have playing golf on Hilton Head. Roger Rulewich, a Robert Trent Jones protege for nearly 35 years, reshaped the bunkers, expanded tees, recontoured the greens, and thinned trees to expose specimen live oaks beside many of the fairways. The 10th green was raised eight feet to provide a more panoramic view of the ocean, beach, and dunes. It’s the prettiest hole on the island. Tees at 2,625 yards offer a “short course” to juniors. Green fees range from $85 to $105 (juniors play for half price). Tee times: 843-785-1136. Golf packages: 800-827-3006.
A word about Rulewich. Mild-mannered and known to many as “Roger Trent Rulewich,” he was the man behind the scenes for the ebullient Jones, who passed away in 2000 at 93. A keeper of the flame, Rulewich embodies the old master’s “hard par, easy bogey” credo. The Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes, by the way, is the layout that inspired Pete Dye to develop an anti-Jones style, starting with Harbour Town Golf Links at the opposite end of the island. Call them the yin and yang of Hilton Head.
