VILAMOURA, Portugal (AP) — Martin Kaymer shot an 11-under 61 Thursday, equaling the lowest round on the European Tour this season, and took a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Portugal Masters.
The 22-year-old German shot 29 on the back nine, closing with five straight birdies. He finished with 11 birdies. Daniel Vancsik of Argentina and Martin Erlandsson of Sweden each shot 64.
“I’ve been waiting for this day for a couple of weeks. My putting has been so-so, but today every putt went in,” said Kaymer, who had 18 putts.
Gregory Bourdy, Lee Westwood and former U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen trailed by four strokes.
“A 59 is on if it does not get windy,” said Westwood, who had an eagle-3 at 17.
Justin Rose, chasing his first Order of Merit title, shot 69. Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy each had 71.
