You can always count on Monty to stir the pot.
The sharp tongue that drew the ire of American fans during much of his playing career has served Colin Montgomerie well during his second act as an itinerant Champions Tour pro and sometimes television commentator.
The latest and greatest jab from Montgomerie came today when he told KICCA.com that Rory McIlory has taken the game to a level even higher than that achieved by Tiger Woods.
“Interesting how Tiger Woods is going to come back into the frame,” Montgomerie said. “Is he going to be able to get back, not just to the levels he was but better than that? Because that’s where Rory McIlroy’s taken the standard of golf — to one level beyond where Tiger was.”
Ouch. Montgomerie than raises the possibility of Rory winning all four majors next year.
“Can he win all four in a year, never mind two? That means six in a row. Wow, that’ll be something. If you’re a betting man – I’m sure there’s a lot of people putting money on it – I’m sure it’s a 100-1 shot but it’s worth a punt.”
Since you asked, Monty, Golfodds.com has Rory at 60/1 to win all four majors next season. Tiger is 250/1. Bovada is hanging an even longer line, putting Rory +10,000 to complete the slam and Tiger +50,000. Monty is of course not on the board. But he’s a good bet to say something interesting each time he’s in front of a camera.
