5 Things to Know About U.S. Open Leader Shane Lowry

Day 3 of the 2016 U.S. Open in 44 Seconds

OAKMONT, Pa. -- Shane Lowry has a two-shot lead in the U.S. Open with 22 holes left to play. The Irishman is five under through 14 holes of his third round, and he'll likely be in one of the final pairings when the players are regrouped and sent out for the final round Sunday afternoon.

Here are five things you need to know about the 29-year-old.

1. He's no slouch.

Lowry might not be a well-known name to some golf fans in the states, but he's ranked 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking and has won three times across two professional tours. As an amateur, he won the 2009 Irish Open in his Euro Tour debut and turned pro the week after. He won the Portugal Masters in 2012, and his biggest victory came last year when he won the WGC-Bridgestone.

2. He has major experience.

This is Lowry's fourth U.S. Open. He was cut in 2011 and 2014 but finished T9 at both the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and the 2014 British Open at Royal Liverpool. He finished T39 at the 2016 Masters -- where he recorded this ace -- which was his second appearance at Augusta.

3. He got married in April.

Lowry married Wendy Honner in New York on April 13, 2016. The couple got engaged in December 2014 and married in NYC on their way home from this year's Masters.

4. He writes for the Irish Times.

5. He has one of the best beards in golf.

But he didn't always have one. This is what he looks like clean shaven, which is from his 2009 Irish Open victory.
