Karma, and the golf gods, seem to be on David Toms' side.

Toms won a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs this week and with it his Tour card for next year, which is a good feeling for any 49-year-old pro. But Toms' accomplishment came as a surprise because he decided to skip last week's Wyndham Championship despite knowing he might get knocked out of the top 125 and not qualify for the postseason (and renew his Tour card). He was 121st entering the Wyndham.

But Toms is a Louisiana native. He was so troubled by the news of the extensive flooding that he chose to miss the Wyndham to assist victims.

"My first thought was what I could do to help them," he told the Golf Channel. "I took some supplies down, things they needed. Food, water, clothes. I don't know what's going to happen. It's going to be a long recovery, I know for sure."

It turns out fate was on his side. He didn't play in the Wyndham but only dropped to 124th and earned a spot in this week's Barclays.
