Tiger Woods Makes It Official; Will Return to Golf at Safeway Open
It's official, Tiger Woods returns to the PGA Tour on Thursday.
The PGA Tour announced Friday morning that Woods will play the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif. next week. Per PGA Tour guidelines, players have to officially enter tournaments by the Friday before the event.
The 14-time major winner last played more than 14 months ago, when he finished T10 at the Wyndham Championship on Aug. 23, 2015. Less than a month later, on Sept. 18, he announced he had another microdisectomy to correct a pinched nerve in his back. On Oct. 30 he announced he had a follow-up procedure.
Woods announced on his website on Sept. 7 that he "hopes" to play in the Safeway Open and also "intends to compete" at the Turkish Airlines Open (Nov. 3-6) and Hero World Challenge (Dec. 1-4). His wording was likely this precise for a reason, as it gave him a return date to target but also an option to back out if he didn't feel healthy enough.
The Safeway Open, the first event of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season, is at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.
