On the heels of a successful launch last year, the USGA is once again celebrating the joys of a nine-hole round with its second annual Play9 Day.
The merits of a nine-hole round are straight-forward, as the time and money commitments of a full 18 hole day are cut in half. The USGA has committed to promoting this experience year-round, but specifically for one day each summer.
“Of paramount importance to the USGA is researching solutions and promoting initiatives to encourage participation while sustaining the health of golf for future generations,” Mike Davis, executive director of the USGA, said. “Play9 Day addresses the time barrier to the game that some face. By expanding our efforts through outreach with USGA Member Clubs and state and regional golf associations, we anticipate a steady uptick from last year’s program, affirming the merits of playing golf when time does not permit an 18-hole round."
One key to the Play9 movement: new players. A full four-hour round of 18 holes is ingrained in most avid golfers, but beginners can ease into the sport with a quick nine holes.
"We encourage everyone to play golf on July 29th, and to bring friends and family along to enjoy the experience," Davis said.
Play9 toolkits can be downloaded at usga.org/play9 and the official hashtag is #Play9Golf.
According to the USGA, almost 30 percent of the U.S. golf courses are nine-hole facilities. So, go on and get out there. No excuses!
