Sam Saunders Qualifies For U.S. Open With Caddie's Irons
Sam Saunders needed an adjustment after the Memorial Tournament, and he found one in his caddie’s bag.
Saunders earned one of the 15 U.S. Open qualifying spots out of the Columbus, Ohio, sectional Monday, and according to the Golf Channel he did so with his caddie’s irons.
Saunders shot 66-66 (12-under) in the 36-hole qualifier and tied with Michael Putnam atop the leaderboard. That came after he missed the cut at the Memorial after shooting rounds of 76 and 80 on Thursday and Friday.
“(Caddie Travis McAlister) has the same irons I used to have, and I decided to use his instead of mine,” Saunders told the Golf Channel. “I also made a good swing adjustment over the weekend. I hit it well.”
