Rory McIlroy might be the top contender to some day knock Tiger Woods off his perch as the face of golf, if he hasn’t already, and McIlroy took a step in that direction Monday.
EA Sports announced that McIlroy, the four-time major winner and 25-year-old from Northern Ireland, will be the new cover boy and namesake of its golf franchise, now titled Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR.
EA Sports previously teamed with Woods for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR from 1998 to 2013 until they parted in 2013.
EA Sports announced last summer that a game would be made for this year, but the release didn’t announce which golfer, if any, would take over a spot Woods held for much of his career.
“I’m very proud and humbled to see my face and name on EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR,” McIlroy said in a release. “This is a great honor, and something I couldn’t even dream of growing up playing the sport. I really hope people enjoy the game and I’m very glad I can be a part of it.”
EA Sports didn’t announce a specific release date or other details about the game, but it will hit shelves in June 2015 and be available for Xbox One and PlayStation4.
The game will be EA Sports' first built using the Frostbite engine, and the release said this toolset “allows the development team to create beautiful new environments, featuring the most detailed courses in franchise history.” Frostbite will also eliminate load times between holes, which was something that slowed the game in past years.
