Rory McIlroy couldn't finish his year with a victory at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the season-ending event that features the past year's major winners, but he did steal the show in the final round with an amazing par after hitting his drive in the water.
On the 17th hole, McIlroy's drive barely scooted into the water on a 486-yard par-5 after landing in the fairway. When he walked up to the ball with playing partners Martin Kaymer (U.S. Open champ), Bubba Watson (Masters champ) and Jim Furyk (an alternate), McIlroy saw he would be forced to hit the ball left-handed from the water to advance it. He remarked he would have to ask the left-handed Watson for one of his clubs, then as he took his stance with his club turned upside-down he called over to Watson and said, "Bubba, you watching it?"
There wasn't too much to watch as McIlroy slashed his ball out a few yards up the fairway, except that McIlroy's white pants received the brunt of the water. After cleaning himself off, his third shot landed short in thick rough short of the green, and his fourth shot failed to reach the green. But McIlroy didn't get his white pants dirty for nothing. He holed his chip for an exciting par.
However, McIlroy's round of 75 kept him out of the playoff in which Kaymer defeated Watson on the first playoff hole with a 10-foot birdie.
