Rory McIlroy didn’t just win the tournament at Firestone last weekend: apparently, he’s also claimed the heart of a (new) blond spectator.
Ashley Bongiovanni took the internet by storm when CBS’s coverage of the WGC Bridgestone in Akron, Ohio, captured her suggested attempts to get the reigning No.1 golfer’s attention – a coy smile, a pull back and drop of her long, blond locks. Golf blog No Laying Up looped the video, and Bongiovanni went viral.
After that, Bongiovanni took her 15-minutes of fame in stride, actively posting on both Twitter and Instagram her support for McIlroy. McIlroy went on to beat Spaniard Sergio Garcia to take home his first WGC championship.
When asked in an interview with No Laying Up whether she would accept an invitation to the PGA by McIlroy, Bongiovanni said she’d go wholeheartedly. But what about the “backwards hat bro” in the background? Bongiovanni had no comment on exactly how she knew him, just that she felt bad for the guy that everyone “seems to think is my boyfriend.”
We’re sure that the CBS camera crew – and the rest of the online world – will be scanning for the little blond on Rory’s tee shots come Thursday. For more news that golfers everywhere are talking about, follow @si_golf on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and subscribe to our YouTube video channel.
