Phil Mickelson Flies Home Between US Open Practice Rounds

U.S. Open Predictions: Why Rory McIlroy Will Win at Oakmont
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck makes his case for why Rory McIlroy will be the 2016 U.S. Open champion.

OAKMONT, Pa. -- Phil Mickelson is making a pit stop between U.S. Open practice rounds.

Mickelson, who is an Open victory away from the career grand slam, played a practice round at Oakmont Country Club Monday before he planned to fly home to Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., for the eighth-grade graduation of his daughter, Sophia, on Tuesday.

A Mickelson spokesman confirmed the news to ESPN and said he would be back at Oakmont for a practice round Wednesday.

This isn't the first time Mickelson has traveled home during Open week. He also made the trip in 2013 for his daughter Amanda's eighth-grade graduation the week of the U.S. Open at Merion. That week, Mickelson shot a Sunday 72 and tied for second, two strokes behind winner Justin Rose.

Mickelson tees off at 2:09 p.m. Thursday with Rose and Henrik Stenson.

Phil Mickelson won't be at Oakmont on Tuesday, but he plans to play a practice round on Wednesday.
