At a press conference in Dubai this week, Gary Player got into his feelings about the “new” big three in golf of Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, and Rory McIlroy, reports the Scotsman.
The energetic Player had nothing but compliments for the trio of modern stars, calling them “wonderful young golfers and wonderful ambassadors.”
That being said, he’s still hoping for Tiger’s triumphant return.
“Tiger gave golf as much a boost as I’ve ever seen in my life and it is vitally important that he comes back,” he said. “But what a challenge he’s got on his hands after his various knee and back operations. Fifty percent of me says he will come back, but fifty percent of me says I have my doubts.”
Tiger Woods was the best putter he had seen up to that point—until Jordan Spieth came along.
“Spieth might be as good a putter as I’ve seen,” he said.
Assessing the skills of the 2016 big three, Player declared that Rory and Jason Day have the best swings, while Jordan’s putting reigns. And while he wouldn’t say for sure which of them he thinks will reach the highest heights in the golf world, he did quote this saying that seems to point in one, Texan direction: “You drive for show and putt for dough.”
