Fred Couples ‘Disappointed’ He’s Not Ryder Cup Captain
Many people thought Fred Couples would be Team USA's next Ryder Cup captain.
Apparently, Couples was one of them.
Couples, who was passed over in favor of Davis Love III for captain of the 2016 U.S. squad, voiced his displeasure during a joint press conference in Dubai he held with Darren Clarke, the 2016 European squad’s Ryder Cup captain.
Couples and Clarke were both picked to lead their respective sides (United States vs. Rest Of The World) in the inaugural Icons Cup. According to sport360.com’s Joe Chakravarty, Couples was asked during the press conference if he was disappointed he wasn’t named captain for the next Ryder Cup.
“When we agreed to this (the Icons Cup), I thought Darren had 75 percent chance of becoming the European Ryder Cup captain, and I thought I was more than 50," Couples said. "As it turns out, he is 100 percent the guy and I am zero. To be honest, it is disappointing, but they picked a great guy in Davis, and my time might be the next one."
As the captain of the Presidents Cup teams, Couples has a 3-0 record, but could not parlay that success into a chance at the 2016 Ryder Cup.
“I thought I had as good a shot as any other guys getting it, and it would have been unbelievable for both of us to be Ryder Cup captains and be sitting here," Couples said. "I am thrilled for Davis, and I am certainly happy for Darren.”
Couples, who not long ago said he was OK with the decision, added that he still would be interested in the gig in 2018.
“I am put off by not getting it this time,” he said. “But having said that, if they ask me for 2018, I will certainly jump at it and accept it.”
