Even after his shot dropped for an ace, Ben Martin had no idea.
All square through 16 holes in his match with world No. 14 Matt Kuchar, Martin may have just been distracted by the back-and-forth bout that had only two holes remaining before a playoff at TPC Harding Park. They both just birdied the 16th and were staring down the 243-yard par-3 17th.
Either way, it wasn’t until his caddie offered a high-five when Martin seemed to realize he made a hole-in-one to win the hole and gain the advantage in the opening round match of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Wednesday.
With a par on the final hole, Martin was victorious in an upset over Kuchar.
