What to Watch for: Thursday at the Masters

Thursday April 8th, 2010

What will I be watching for in the first round? Well, an alien abduction is high on my list. I also plan to follow Sweden's Robert Karlsson for his entire round to see if he's fully recovered from the eye injury that prevented him from sweeping last year's majors. (Karlsson won in Qatar in February, so he's my dark horse pick.) The pollen count will also have my full attention, of course. This could be the Masters that is decided by an unstifled sneeze.
But if those fascinating options disappoint, I'll join the pack and lock my orbs on Tiger Woods's return to tournament golf. Like everyone else, I want to see how he plays. Will he spray the ball around the property as he did in practice rounds? Will his short game show rust from the long layoff? Will he post a respectable score?
More importantly, I want to see how he plays. Will he be the domineering, cocksure Tiger who fist-pumped championship fields into submission? Or will five months of tabloid exposure, spousal fury, maternal hectoring, corporate shunning and abject humiliation deliver us a muted, milquetoast Tiger?
I'm thinking that Tiger 3.0 will be indistinguishable from Tiger 2.0. But we won't know until he tees it up, will we?
