In football, you're only as good as your assistant coaches. The same may not be true in the Ryder Cup, but it would be hard to convince anyone that having Raymond Floyd and Dave Stockton around as assistants didn't help Paul Azinger lead the U.S. Ryder Cup team to victory two years ago at Valhalla.
U.S. captain Corey Pavin named his four assistants for this fall's Ryder Cup in Wales--Tom Lehman, Davis Love, Jeff Sluman and Paul Goydos. Sluman has been an assistant to Jack Nicklaus in several Presidents Cups. Goydos, meanwhile, said his Ryder Cup experience has been limited to watching it on TV.
As for why he was picked, Goydos reinforced why he'll probably be the best quote at the Ryder Cup: "It came down to me and Brett Favre," Goydos said.
As for his lack of experience in team match play, Goydos quipped: "I have
as much as Michael Jordan." (Jordan was an assistant captain at last year's Presidents Cup at Harding Park, where he ignored a city smoking statute and lit up cigars on the course.)
The Ryder Cup will be Oct. 1-3 in Wales. Who's going to make the U.S. team this time? Stay tuned.
