First U.S. Open Challenge contestant dies from lung cancer

On the eve of the second Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge, it was reported today that last year's contestant died from lung cancer. A lifelong non-smoker, John Atkinson, 40, won an essay contest last year, and he was paired with three celebrities as he tried to break 100 at Torrey Pines a week before the U.S. Open.Atkinson's score of 114 was respectable considering he was playing a U.S. Open course with celebrities and cameras all around him. But it was heroic given the fact that he continued to play golf while going through chemotherapy.
