SOUTHPORT, England - Golfers aren't known for having the most edgy nicknames. The King? The Golden Bear? The Shark? El Nino? All appropriate, perhaps, but none will elicit a chuckle from fans.
And then there's Anthony Wall.
The 33-year-old Englishman is a steady, if unspectacular performer on the European PGA Tour who won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2000. Through 12 holes of his opening round at Birkdale he stood a respectable two-over-par. But he does have a funny nickname, even if Wall himself might not appreciate it.
According to one British wag in the press center, Wall's nickname is "Bomb Scare."
Why? "Because he's so boring that he forces everyone to clear out of the room."
