In his first visit to the Players last year, Robert Garrigus was introduced to the Stadium Course with an opening 85. Ugh. He bounced back with 75 but still missed the cut.
His second try wasn't a lot better. He shot 79-76 this week, but he at least went home with a highlight. He began Friday's round with a double on the 10th hole but birdied the 12th and then aced the 13th, a par 3 over a pond. He holed an 8-iron shot.
"That was one of the only highlights of the week for me," said Garrigus. "We're standing on the tee box waiting for the group in front of us. I was joking around trying to chuck stuff into the garbage and not really paying attention, get up and slapped an 8-iron right at it and it ended up going in. It was kind of a shock. It was my first one on the PGA Tour and couldn't have happened at a better place."
It was the ninth ace of his life, Garrigus said. "I've had a bunch go in but none cooler that that," he said.
