Art Spander of the Oakland Tribune has been covering sports forever it seems. He was there when Jack Nicklaus won the Masters at age 46 in 1986. He covered Joe Montana and Steve Young in their heyday. He was banging on a typewriter when many scribes were still sucking their thumbs. Like my former colleague, Dave Anderson at the New York Times, Spander likes to write about the big names, and he does it well. Check out this winning piece on the conundrum that is Phil Mickelson.
