Rory McIlroy two shots back at Korea Open
In an up-and-down day at the Korea Open, Rory McIlroy capped his second round with a birdie run on his back-nine to close with a 69 and enter the weekend two shots behind the tournament leader, Soon-sang Hong
McIlroy recorded seven birdies, six pars and five bogeys on a day where his scorecard was extra-colorful. After teeing off on the back nine, McIlory made bogey at Nos. 12, 14, 15 and 16 but salvaged his first nine with bookend birdies on Nos. 10 and 18. He recovered to close his round with a four-under back nine, good enough for a tie for 5th entering Saturday.
"I'm driving the ball very well and for the most part, my iron play is pretty good," the former world No. 1 said. "But I definitely missed a few opportunities out there. I definitely could have been a few shots better, but I'm in a good position going into the weekend and that's all you can ask for."
Only 18 of the 114 participants are under par for the tournament.
