In an interview with KDSK, an NBC-affiliated television station, Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith discussed his plans to raise funds to build a 9-hole golf facility for inner-city youth in St. Louis. The Cardinals legend is the president of the Gateway PGA Foundation, an organization "dedicated to improving lives through golf while growing the game."
"One of the biggest problems in the inner city is idle time," Smith said, "so we’re trying to provide them with some creative things that are going to
keep their minds active and the game of golf is certainly one of those things
that teach you great citizenship and it provides them with something else to do
other than getting involved with drugs and violence."
Smith hopes to complete the project in time for the 100th PGA Championship's arrival at St. Louis' Bellerive Country Club in 2018.
