These guys dressed like golfers but were up to no good.
According to a CBS New York report, “thieves disguised as golfers” have been cleaning up at private clubs along the eastern seaboard, donning collared shirts and caps, breezing into clubhouses and making off with credit cards and cash.
In one incident, surveillance cameras captured video of a man dressed in the threads of a Sunday duffer, traipsing into Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey to clean up.
According to police, the man, identified as Oscar Cabrera and allegedly working with an accomplice named Luis Paz, stole credit cards from three Baltusrol members on June 30, and later used them to purchase more than $8,000 worth of gift cards at Target stores.
The scheme was going well for the pair of pretend golfers until July 20, when the men allegedly made a similar attempt at Canoe Brook Country Club in Short Hills, N.J., where employees recognized Cabrera from a police sketch. Cabrera was arrested at the club
Paz was arrested in Queen, N.Y. last week.
According to the CBS report, police suspect the men may also have pulled off heists at clubs in several other states from Massuchusetts to Florida. Photo: Baltusrol Golf Club (Fred Vuich / SI)
