Els: I should have said something to Rory

Ernie_blogErnie Els has two decades on Rory McIlroy. At 43, Els has lived through the equivalent of 80 more majors than McIlroy, five more presidential terms, and too many more birdies, bogeys and beers to count.

So upon further review of last week's much ballyhooed second round at the Honda Classic, Els wishes he had said something. As Hank Gola of the New York Daily News reports, he would have at least had a chance of talking McIlroy out of quitting just nine holes into his second round.

"When I shook his hand on 18, I wanted to say something to him, but I didn't,
and I kind of regret that," Els said at the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral
Tuesday. "It was obviously a heat of the moment thing. He is who he is. You've
got to respect what the individual at that moment is like, and he wanted to get
off.
"It's hard to say to the guy, 'hey, why don't you stay out here, just think
about it a little bit,' when the guy is actually struggling with something. So
at first, I thought that's what I should have said, and then we heard that it
was a toothache, and then I was kind of happy I didn't. But I probably should
have said something."
