3 Bubba Watson's lead after 54 holes at the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral. Watson wasn't able to hold this lead Sunday, when he shot 74 while Justin Rose [right] shot 70. In 2012, victors have come back from deficits of eight (Kyle Stanley/Phoenix Open), seven (Brandt Snedeker/Farmers Insurance), seven (John Huh/Mayakoba Golf Classic), six (Phil Mickelson/AT&T Pebble Beach) and now three (Justin Rose/WGC-Cadillac). On the other end of the spectrum, Steve Stricker won the Hyundai with a five-shot third-round lead and Mark Wilson won the Humana with a three-shot lead after the third round.
1 Number of putts inside 5 feet that Cadillac Championship winner Justin Rose missed all week in Doral. (He made 56 of them.) Rose won the tournament without standing out in many statistical categories. He was T18th in driving accuracy, hitting 32 of 56 fairways, T17th in greens in regulation, hitting 47 of 72 greens, and he ranked 29th in strokes-gained putting. In total putts made, Rose was 35th with 298 feet of putts, compared to Francesco Molinari who led the stat making 390 feet of putts. Molinari finished T13th. One bright spot: Rose was sixth in scrambling, getting up and down 19 of the 25 greens he missed.
4 Number of tournaments Justin Rose has won coming from behind in the final round. That is what happened on Sunday with Rose, who started the day three back of Bubba Watson.
Rose also did this in his first professional victory on the European Tour at the 2002 Dunhill Championship in South Africa. In that event, Rose went into the final round four back of Martin Maritz, who had problems shooting a final round 71 while Rose shot 65 to win by two. Four months later he repeated the same story, entering the final round of the British Masters three shots behind Phillip Price, who shot 72 while Rose shot 65 to win by a shot over Ian Poulter. Rose won a third time on the European Tour in the last event of 2007 at the Volvo Masters, this time he was leading going into the final round by four shots but he shot 74 and only won the tournament in a three way playoff. On the PGA Tour, his first win was the 2010 Memorial when he went into the final round four shots behind Rickie Fowler. While Fowler was imploding with a 73, Rose shot 66 to win by three. Four weeks later Rose won again at the AT&T National, but this time he had a four-shot lead going into the final round, shot 70 and held on for a one-shot win over Ryan Moore. Rose again led by four going into the final round of the 2011 BMW Championship and held on with a 71 to win by two over John Senden. So with his comeback this week at Doral, he has come from behind in the final round in four of his seven victories on the PGA and European tours.
3 Number of consecutive years in which Justin Rose has a win on the PGA Tour.
5 Number of times Bubba Watson has lost a tournament in which he had the third-round lead. He only has won once when holding the third-round lead, and it took a playoff over Webb Simpson to win the 2011 Zurich Classic.
3 Number of missed chances for birdie Bubba Watson had inside 20 feet in his final five holes at Doral. After making bogey at 13, Watson missed a 10-footer for birdie at 14, a 15-footer for birdie at 16 and then a 9-footer for birdie at 18.
318 Bubba Watson's average driving distance for the week (1st). The last time a player won on the PGA Tour while leading the driving distance stats was Bubba last year at the Zurich Classic. In all three of Watson's wins, he has led the field in driving distance.
16 Number of strokes Rory McIlroy was under par in his final 59 holes at Doral. He was 2-over through his first 13 holes.
911 Number of days since Tiger Woods's last win on the PGA Tour at the 2009 BMW Championship. He is now 0 for his last 26 PGA Tour starts in a career in which he has won an average of once every 10 starts. In the two years and ten months between August 1999 and June 2002, he won 22 times, with seven majors, three World Golf Championships and a Players Championship.
59 Sergio Garcia's ringer score for the week, an eagle, 11 birdies and 6 pars. (The ringer score is the sum of the best score a player scored on each hole during the tournament.) By comparison, winner Justin Rose ringer score was 58. Unfortunately for Garcia, he also had 15 bogeys, a double bogey, a triple bogey and made a 12 on the par-4 third hole, the highest score on a hole for the year.
71.137 Scoring average at the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral. For the fifth straight year the scoring average was below par as the Blue Monster course didn't play like a monster. Compare this year's 71.137 average with Doral's scoring average of 74.74 between 1962 and 1965, the 73.28 scoring average between 1966 and 1970, and the 73.09 average between 1996 and 1999. The Blue Monster's bite is now gone; the course is the easiest course to hold either a major, a Players Championship and a World Golf Championship.
