His par putt doesn't fall, and Mickelson finishes bogey-bogey to shoot a 2-under 70. Not all bad considering he's battling a stomach bug, but unfortunately for Phil, he has an early tee time Friday morning. THRILL ALERT! From the trees on 18, Phil blasts his second shot short of the green. In the group ahead, Villegas makes par to finish at 5 under. 5:47 p.m. Perry's tee shot on No. 9 flies through a bunker and into the rough. Phil's drive on 18 flies way left into the woods.
5:41 p.m. On 17, Phil's long birdie putt flies by the hole, and he misses his par putt. Bogey knocks him down to 3 under. Perry makes a tough bogey after nearly driving the green on No. 8. Villegas bails out right of the 18th green. Wheels are falling off here as the first round nears completion. 5:37 p.m. Villegas finds the fairway on 18. Back on No. 8, Perry nearly drives the green, and looks like he'll get up-and-down for bird ... nevermind. Perry flubbed his chip shot and now is struggling to make par. THRILL ALERT! Mickelson flirts with the water on the par-3 17th, but he just catches the green. Long putt for birdie ahead. 5:28 p.m. Not much happening this year for Perry, only one top 10, but Lerner said Perry is working out and trying to give it one more run with the flatbellies before joining the Champions Tour. 5:26 p.m. Kenny Perry drains an eagle on the par-5 7th, his 16th, to tie Van Pelt for the lead. 5:22 p.m. Next for Phil is the 217-yard, par-3 17th, with water on the left side of the green. Villegas, playing in front of Phil, is safely on the green. 5:16 p.m. Uh oh. Phil hits a terrible wedge shot from the fairway that finds the left rough. Mickelson makes up for it with a nice pitch. Easy par. 5:13 p.m. A little info on leader Bo Van Pelt. He is coming off a T3 at Harbour Town, and Van Pelt credits his good play to a refurbished putter.
"I was changing putters all the time and trying new stuff, and finally went back to an old putter that I had used for about four-and-a-half years that I had won with last year and got it refurbished the week of the Masters and putted a little bit better ... in Harbour Town," Van Pelt said. 5:09 p.m. J.J. Henry moves into a tie for second with Villegas and Perry at 5 under, two behind Van Pelt. 5:05 p.m. Phil pounds a drive 340 yards down the fairway on 16. 4:57 p.m. Up next for Phil is "The Green Mile" -- holes 16, 17 and 18. While the name doesn't sound sinister, The Green Mile ranked as the toughest closing stretch of holes last season, ahead of Bay Hill, Muirfield Village (Memorial), Redstone (Houston Open) and Sedgefield (Wyndham). 4:54 p.m. Phil's eagle putt slides well left. Looks like a misread there. No worries, he makes birdie, and Mickelson moves to 4 under, three behind Van Pelt. 4:47 p.m. Lerner and Faldo make a nice observation. It appears Phil's walking slow in between shots, trying to conserve his energy. Phil may not look 100%, but he's playing just fine. THRILL ALERT! From 265 yards out, Mickelson hits the green in two and has about 30 feet for eagle. 4:43 p.m. Mickelson's tee shot scoots by the bunker and lands in the right rough. Kenny Perry makes a birdie on No. 4 to tie Villegas for second at 5 under 4:41 p.m. One of the players in at 3 under is Ricky Barnes. SI's Farrell Evans had a lively chat with Barnes this week. 4:37 p.m. Villegas misses the par-5 15th in two, but he has a good chance to get up-and-down. players (-3). 4:34 p.m. Phil hits a beautiful pitch to about 7 feet, and he drains the birdie to get to 3 under. THRILL ALERT! Mickelson tries to drive the green on the 346-yard, par-4 14th, but he draws it too much and lands right of the green. Phil now has a downhill chip shot with water behind the green. 4:16 p.m. Villegas nails his second shot to about 5 feet on 14. He drains the birdie to move into second behind Van Pelt. 4:14 p.m. Furyk holes out from off the green to get back to even par. Mickelson misses his birdie putt. 4:09 p.m. From 188 yards, Mickelson hits an 8-iron to about 25 feet on the par-3 13th. 4:06 p.m. Funny story from across the pond. After his round today, Colin Montgomerie threw an f-bomb toward a tournament official due to some music blaring near the course. Oh man, I cannot wait for the Ryder Cup. 4:03 p.m. Again, Phil barely misses a birdie, surprising since, thanks to Sabbatini, Phil's had about 25 minutes to study the line. 4:01 p.m. Slow Play Sheriff Rory Sabbatini is trying to hit shots that a 20-handicapper wouldn't even try. Dude is taking forever to play No. 12. 3:57 p.m. This just in ... In her final event before stepping away from the game, Lorena Ochoa shoots a 7-under 66 in Mexico, three behind leader Ai Miyazato. Michelle Wie also is in with a 66. 3:54 p.m. Mickelson's wedge backs up to about 10 feet. Lefty has another shot at birdie. 3:48 p.m. Mickelson flubs one off the tee with a 3-wood on No. 12, but he gets a nice kick into the fairway. 3:44 p.m. At the last second, Phil's birdie putt dives to the right. Mickelson turns away in disgust, stays at 2 under. 3:40 p.m. Phil finds the rough off the tee on No. 11. From 129, Phil knocks it to about 15 feet, another good look at birdie. Like Augusta, the "rough" at Quail Hollow is more like a "first cut." 3:33 p.m. Fred Couples might be losing a bit of his magic. He opened with a 4-over 76 today. 3:31 p.m. Mickelson's eagle putt comes up well short, but he makes a 5-footer for birdie to get back to 2 under. THRILL ALERT! Mickelson goes for the green in two on No. 10 from 275 yards and ... makes it! Eagle putt coming up. 3:18 p.m. Anthony Kim has to be kicking himself. Started the day 5 under through eight holes, but he made three bogeys and a double bogey coming in. D'oh! 3:16 p.m. Camilo's eagle slides by, taps in for birdie to move to 4 under, three behind Van Pelt. Back on the tee, Mickelson finds the fairway, and he'll be going for the green in two. 3:13 p.m. Phil bogeys No. 9 to shoot a 1-under 35 on the front nine. 3:11 p.m. Villegas and J.B. Holmes both nail the par-5 10th in two. Villegas can move into second place with an eagle. 3:09 p.m. Faldo points out Phil's driver at the Masters had 6.5 degrees of loft. Hey, if you're trying to keep it low out of the trees, maybe driver wasn't so crazy. 3:07 p.m. From the fairway, Mickelson's third shot from 97 yards comes up short. He'll have a long putt for par. 3:03 p.m. From the pine straw, Phil hits a driver out of trees! There's the Thrill we all know and love! 2:59 p.m. On No. 9, Phil sends his tee shot into the woods. Golf Channel's Sir Nick Faldo says they'll need a GPS to find it.

What professional golfer would give of their time to travel to the mountains of North Carolina on Friday, June 25th for the 1st Annual Westwood Elementary School Golf Tournament at Mt Aire Golf Course to help raise money for our school? Sands also pointed out Mickelson went through a similar issue last year at Doral and went on to win the tournament. 2:30 p.m. Tiger Recap: Four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3 17th. So whatcha working on at the range Tiger? "Not a damn thing," Woods said. "I'm just going to go hang it up today and come out tomorrow."
