He's a 30-year-old Aussie from Melbourne and he just missed shooting 59, firing a final-round 60, 12 under par, to win the Victorian PGA Championship on the Australasian Tour. His score tied the Australasian Tour's record, shared by Ernie Els and Paul Gow. Presnell won a Nationwide Tour event in 2009 and finished 28th on the money list, just missing a ticket to the big tour.
Presnell missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole that the Australian AP listed as 1.5 meters. He did birdie the 18th, though, with another short putt of the same length. The best part of it was that Presnell admitted that thoughts of shooting 59 messed with his mind on the final nine.
"Absolutely," said Presnell, when asked if he'd entertained hopes of
59 during a round where he missed just one green in regulation and
needed only 23 putts. "Probably early on the back nine when I birdied 11 and 12 and 13. But
then also a few nerves crept in too and I kind of lost it with about
four to play. To be honest I didn't even know what I had after I played
the last hole. I mean 60, I'm stoked with that but
59 if I could have holed a five-footer on the fourth or the 17th, it
would have been great."
