Swede smell of success: Henrik Stenson's small changes could produce big results

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Henrik Stenson stopped by the press center to talk with golf writers for a few minutes Tuesday afternoon. He was asked if it was true that Tiger Woods' daughter, Sam, spoke more words in Swedish than in English."She does?" Stenson asked."That's what Tiger claims," a writer said."Good," Stenson said with a smile.Stenson, your Players champion, is a Swede who doesn't get enough credit for his sense of humor. Although you may have figured that out when he undressed to play a shot out of the water at Doral earlier this year.Asked his thoughts on Bethpage Black, which he hadn't seen until the weekend, Stenson answered, "Hard. Long. Wet." Yeah, that covers it.Asked about the sign near the first tee that warns of the course's difficulty, Stenson said, "You don't seen many of those. More on ski slopes. It's a fun thing. It's a bit of a gimmick."Asked which was the most difficult hole on the course, he said, "I can give you a list of five or six holes instead of just one." One other note about Stenson: His U.S. Open track record consists of two missed cuts and a 26th. Normally, he said, he is in Europe and takes two weeks off before coming to the Open. This year, he played in Memphis last week, where he missed the cut. He came to New York on Saturday and played an 18-hole practice round Sunday. Could that small difference in his preparation may make a big difference in his result?
