The woman to watch in round two at the SBS Open is Yani Tseng, the reigning LPGA Championship champ who tees off at 11:40 local time. The long-hitting Tseng is up to No. 2 in the World Ranking — Annika Sorenstam predicted a while ago that Tseng would someday reach No. 1 — and the 20-year-old native of Taiwan has a simple goal this year: “To become a birdie machine.” After an opening 66 during a windy, rainy morning she’s well on her way.
Naturally, I will also be watching Michelle Wie to see if she can build on her dazzling 66, which included a closing burst of three-straight birdies that put a serious charge into this tournament. Wie controlled her ball expertly during a blustery afternoon and had beautiful speed on the grainy greens. Wie is in the second group off, at 7:20 a.m. local time. With the opening day jitters behind her and the promise of calmer conditions I wouldn’t be surprised to see her take it even lower during the second round.
