The PGA Tour reminds me a lot of the NBA during Michael Jordan's reign, a sport with a transcendent star who may end up as the greatest to ever play the game. But where will the Tour be when Tiger Woods is gone?
Many of the stories coming out of the Players Championship this week have centered on Woods even though he isn't playing. But who are the personalities who will carry the sport deep into the 21st century? Who is the player bold enough to bring a rubber snake to the first tee (like Lee Trevino) or the guy who turns a birdie putt into a sword dance (like Chi Chi Rodriguez). Let's face it. Without the guy in the red shirt on Sundays pumping his fist across the green, the game of golf is a little dull. Let's hope Rory Sabbatini continues to roar, Anthony Kim keeps his cocky edge, and the rest of the PGA Tour develops some personality.
