Should the Players (née the Players Championship) be considered a major championship once and for all? It's a fine tournament (even with that funky 17th hole) and it has one of the strongest fields in golf (even without Tiger Woods this year). But does it have the history and gravitas to rival the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and P.G.A.?
I say it has neither. Four is a good, round number. If you make the Players a major you change the past and change the arithmetic of Woods's pursuit of Jack Nicklaus's record haul of 18 professional majors. With his three Players Championships, Nicklaus would have 21 professional majors and Woods (the 2001 champ) would have 14. Crazy, right? Ken Willis of the Daytona Beach News-Journal, though, doesn't think the idea is nuts.
