Nice Shot, Wagnah!
Here's a funny story I never got to tell in my January 2007 Golf Magazine profile of Johnson Wagner, who is leading the Shell Houston Open at 12 under par as of this posting on Friday afternoon. When Wagner qualified for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock, he was relatively unknown, despite his accomplishments in the Met Section (Wagner grew up in Garrison, N.Y.). So, too, was J.J. Henry, who was also semi-local (Hartford, Conn.). This presumably is how the starter got the two mixed up. (They look nothing alike.)
As Henry stood on the tee, he was announced, "Now on the tee, Johnson Wagner!" The mistake was quickly corrected, but this being New York, not quickly forgotten. As Henry toured the course that day, any time he hit a good shot a wise guy in the crowd hollered, "Nice shot, Wagnah!" And, of course, I now say the same thing to Henry every time I see him.
