"To make two double bogeys and a 3-putt and only be four back, that's a great position to be in. Because I know I can clean that up tomorrow," Woods said of his one over par finish.

"I'm always a little rusty the front nine," Mickelson said. "And I'm glad that I was able to keep it in check and only shoot a few over and recover on the back."

Woods sank a putt to save par on 13. "It was nice to make that putt and keep some momentum going in the back nine and unfortunately kind of messed that up from there," Woods said.

"I enjoy playing with Tiger," Scott said. "I find it a lot easier to focus because I think I've got to be a little more disciplined."

Mickelson opted not to carry his driver in the first round and used his 3-wood instead. "My game plan was that I only want to hit it a certain distance. I don't really want to hit it past 300 yards on most of the par-4s because it starts running into the rough," he said.
