Tiger at Torrey: Child's Play
Tiger Woods and Torrey Pines just go together, and not because they sound like neighboring meadows in a botanical garden. Woods has fashioned a bouquet of seven wins on the famed public course, the first as a 15-year-old at the Junior World Championships, and six more at the Buick Invitational.
The Junior World draws child phenoms to Torrey and other San Diego-area courses. In 1984, at age 8, Woods won the 9-10 boys' division at nearby Presidio Hills, where he won again in 1985, '88, '89 and '90.
Torrey was for older kids, but some sensed the track would soon be hit by a perfect storm. Even in the 10- and-under event, his parents wore yellow "Team Tiger" T-shirts, with his picture on the front, says Junior World tournament director Megan Mahoney. "There was something special about him even then."
Here's a rundown of Tiger's Torrey victories with comments both from Woods and witnesses. Behold, Tiger's Magnificent Seven.
