Third Round at the Nelson

Luke Donald escaped from the trees on No. 9 to save par and keep his lead heading into Sunday. "There's a lot of people that have a chance to win," Donald said. "That's a little bit why I'm disappointed I made 4 on 17. I think just giving that one back maybe gave a few more people a thought that they might have a good chance tomorrow."

For two days, Phil Mickelson struggled on the back nine, but he held it together Saturday to shoot a four-under 66. "I played much better and was able to finish off the round," Mickelson said. "I'm still quite a ways back and I'm going to have to shoot a very low round tomorrow, but at least I have a chance."

Scott Verplank held a two shot lead, but bogeyed 13 and 15. Verplank rebounded with a birdie on 18, and he'll be in the final group with Donald. "I always enjoy making birdies," Verplank said. "I figure it's a lot more fun to do that than the other stuff, so I was just kind of trying to ride the wave."

Michael Allen fired a 64 to move within two shots of the lead. Allen qualified for the Nelson on Monday with birdies on the last two holes. Allen won the spot in a playoff. "You get in the tournament, you feel like you're playing well, so it's nice to finally put together a good round on Saturday," Allen said. "That's been my nemesis for a long time."

The third round was stopped for a moment of silence to honor Byron Nelson, who died in September at the age of 94. • Byron Nelson: His Last Interview
