Swing Sequence: Geoff Ogilvy
11 of 11
The Pitch That Won the U.S. Open
While many people remember Ogilvy's great up-and-down on the 72nd hole to
steal the Open from Phil Mickelson, some forget he also chipped in on the 71st
hole. The open clubface position that's part of Ogilvy's full-swing technique makes
this shot easier to hit. Playing a short pitch from a tight lie requires deft hands and
great rhythm, two qualities Ogilvy has in spades. The "chicken wing" of his left arm
keeps the hands from rolling during
impact (a move that would close the
clubface), softening the ball's landing.
The clubhead is released even on a
short pitch, allowing the flange to
work through the grass without
digging and creating a shot that will
check up quickly on the green.
