This story is for you if...
• You seldom make contact on the sweet spot.
• You have no sense of how to transition from backswing to downswing.
The Common Wisdom
From the top of your backswing, turn your hips toward the target.
Why It's Misleading
When you start your downswing by turning, your swing immediately switches to an outside-in path, even if you were in perfect position at the top. This cut-swing path is the one that gives you your slice or, in the event you square the face, a vicious pull.
Positioning the club at the start of your downswing is a critical moment in your swing. Although it happens very rapidly, you can think of it in two steps.
THE RIGHT WAY TO START YOUR DOWNSWING
STEP 1: Move your upper body weight to the left
At the top, feel like you're sitting down on a chair that's just beneath your rear end and slightly to your left. Use your legs to push your feet into the ground and move your left hip toward the target. It's a subtle move, but what's most important is that you move laterally without turning.
