Fifty-nine-year-old Watson still has one shot left at a sixth claret jug. "I feel like I can play St. Andrews. I still have some of the shots to be able to play that golf course. We'll just have to see. We'll have to see," he said.

"It would have been a hell of a story, wouldn't it? It would have been a hell of a story. It wasn't to be," Watson said. "And yes, it's a great disappointment. It tears at your gut, as it always has torn at my gut. It's not easy to take."

"I'm engulfed by the joy, for sure. I can understand, though, the mystique that came really close to developing here and the story," he said after the playoff. "But in the end, you know, it's a tournament to see who lasts the longest. It's a survival test out there, as you look at the scoreboard with the winning score being -2. It's a survival test, and I don't know what else to say."
